Christine
According to Leroux's novel, Christine Daae was bown
near
Uppsala (Sweden) . Her mother died when she was
only six years old and her childhood passed together her
ancient father. He could play the violin and he was
considered as the best rural musician in all Scandinavia.
Christine learnt to sing long before she could even read
or write and she always accompanying his father in
every music fair celebrated in their town.
After her mother had died, Christine Daaé and her father
moved to Uppsala to seek glory, without success.
Therefore they started to visit every music fair where
Christine sang and her father played the violin. One day,
they performed at a fair called Limby Fair  and they were
discovered by Professor Valerius who took them to
Gothenburg and took charge of Christine's education.
Valerius couple moved to France and they took Christine
Daaé and her father with them. Soon, Papa Daee began
to miss his natal Sweden and he only felt better when
Valerius family and her dear daughter went to
Perros-Guirec (Bretagne) in summer.
There, they always played in fairs and soon everybody
knew them by their wonderful music.
It was there where Christine met Raoul de Chagny, a shy
boy who had felt in love with Christine's sweet voice.
They  played with each other every day, and Raoul
started to learn how to play the violin meanwhile
Christine's father told them Scandinavian fairy tales like
The Angel of Music one. This legend told the peculiar
story of one little girl named Lotte who had the
wonderful gift of listening the voice of the Angel of Music
who always visited her singing beautiful melodies.
Christine's father promised her that when he be in
Heaven he would send her this Angel who would
protect and teach her.
Raoul and Christine grew up together feeling that their
friendship was leading to something deeper. Little time
before Papa Daae died, Raoul and Christine separated
and the young girl went to Paris with Madame Valerius
as her protector.
Without his dear father, Christine's sorrow was seizing
of her soul and she lost all her happiness, walking
through life with hesitation and fear.
Erik's love would save her, giving her a new  voice,
symbol of her devotion and renewal of her soul.

It's interesting observing how Christine has been
compared  with persons from real life : that's the case of
Mrs. Christine Nilsson, or even with certain characters
taken from mythology, like
Proserpina,  or Psyche.
In fact, Christine and Erik's story is a mythical drama
plenty of symbols...
To the young soprano, Erik's face means confront her
own failing of love, her insecurities as woman and
singer. Erik represents for her the bridge between the
man and the spirit, between the love of a little girl or the
love of a woman.
She will evolve during all the story transforming herself
in true love which will grant forgiveness and consolation.
