Mazandaran is a province in northern Iran, bordering the
Caspian Sea . Mazandaran or Mazenderan was a part of
the Persian province of Hyrcania.
The name is from Old Persian "mahs Indra" which means
Great/Big Indra, a vedic god (vedic : Of or relating to the
Veda or Vedas, the variety of Sanskrit in which they are
written, or the Hindu culture that produced them).

Ahmad Khan Durrani in XVIII Century declared to himself
king and to increase his power he invaded the provinces of
Sind and Punjab from India.
That way, part of Hindu's culture were inserted in Persia.
This fact is very significant in Erik's story because
securely, he learnt the technique of using the lazzo, named
Punjab Lazzo, in all the years he was serving the Shah.
Probably, the origin of this technique of killing comes
from an Hindu sect called "The Thugs" who adored Kali
goddess (Kali was the goddess of Life and Death ). The
Thug method of killing was strangulation, usually from
behind the victim with a skillfully handled yellow silk cloth
called a rumal. The name "Thug" came from the Hindi verb
thaglana, "to deceive," and reflected the uncanny ability of
Thugs to befriend their intended victims and to lure them
into a state of complacency and vulnerability. They also
were named Phansigars (lazzo in Hindu).
It's curious observing that in Leroux's Fantome de l'Opera
and The bloody doll novels as well as in The Angel of the
Opera book by Sam Siciliano, appear the using of this
Punjab Lazzo.
