The construction of the Opera Garnier was very complicated but now
it is one of the buildings more studied and valued because the novelty
in its design and materials.
In Garnier's funeral rites, Larroumet, the perpetual secretary of the
Opera, he laid in words the popular feeling, highlighting precisely the
points more important achieved in the Opera:
" I do not believe than after Versailles's Palace exist an architectonic
program more beautiful that to pay a courteous visit to. Chat Garnier
embodied at a building his image, not only the brilliant and caducous
regimen of the Second Empire, but civilization of the century XIX with
his luxury, his love for pleasure, his felt artistic refining.
He wanted his theater to be polychromatic and golden, rich for his
matter, immense for his proportions, worthy of the parties that Paris
was giving the world. Like entrance to the living room where the more
finished and sumptuous artistic kind, lyrical drama, he displayed his
forms, colors and masses, and he spilled torrents of light and sound,
he prepared that stair that he was claiming on his steps to the brilliant
hierarchy of the elegant Paris, and he invited the Universe to remount
them. It's one of these buildings famous forever where humanity
seems to recognize its own apotheosis and exalts his victory on
ancient barbarism ".
