The Opera during Paris' German
occupation
(1940-1944)
The 14th Juny of 1940, German army enters in Paris and
parades before the Arc of Triumph and Champs Elysees.
This occupation will endure still 24th August of 1944, date
when Paris will be liberated by the Allied forces.
Did you know that The Opera was Hitler's favorite building?
He visited it his first day in Paris and he owned a book
written by Charles Garnier: Le Nouvel Opera de Paris,
which was found in the bunker where he died.
The Opera visit was at 6 am. and the newspaper seller
couldn't believe his eyes when he saw Hitler going into the
building.
At the Opera, the Führer asked for a concrete room and
when they told him it had been closed due to some
cleaning process, he exclaimed with triumph: "Can you see
it? I'm a expert in the Opera!"
A curious anecdote: the man who guided him at the Opera
didn't want to accept the 50 marcs Hitler wanted to give
him.
